The 2008 Masters Golf tournament

April 7-13 at The Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia

The Masters Tournament, which is commonly referred to as The Masters or The US Masters, is one of four major championships in men's professional golf and the first of the four to be played each year. Unlike the other major championships, the Masters is held every year at the same location, Augusta National Golf Club, a private golf club in the city of Augusta, Georgia, USA. The Masters was started by Clifford Roberts and Bobby Jones, who designed Augusta National with legendary course architect Alister MacKenzie.

Augusta National is an amazing golf course and certainly has a mystique about it, as even the richest and most prominent businessmen in the country can’t get on this course without a membership. The Augusta National Golf Club limits the number of golfers that participate in its Masters championship event every year and only has the best of the best playing for the chance to wear the prestigious Masters green jacket. Getting one of those memberships is even harder, and lately this has generated some controversy as women’s groups have ripped the club and its members for not having a female member.

The Masters Golf Green jacket
In addition to a cash award, the winner of the tournament is presented with a distinctive green jacket, awarded since 1949, and highly coveted among professional golfers. The green coat is actually the official coat worn by members of Augusta National while on the club grounds; each Masters winner becomes an honorary member of the club. Winners keep their jacket for the first year after their first victory, then return it to the club to wear during tournament week each following year. The tradition that began in 1949, when Sam Snead was the winner. The Green Jacket is only allowed to be removed from Augusta National by the reigning champion, after which it must remain at the club. The only exception to this rule is Gary Player, who failed to return his jacket after his 1961 victory, despite the club's insistence that he do so. EVENT HISTORY

The Masters Tournament, golf's most unique major championship, was created by Clifford Roberts and legendary amateur Bobby Jones, who founded it to provide a service to golf. The first Masters, originally named the Augusta National Invitational Tournament, was played in March of 1934, and in 1940 moved to its permanent home during the first full week in April. The event entered the golf world's consciousness in 1935, when Gene Sarazen hit "the shot heard 'round the world" to make a double eagle on the par-5 15th hole and went on to win the title. Today, the Masters is known around the world for its azalea-draped scenery, its lack of commercialization and those famous green jackets.    read more..

COURSE OVERVIEW

Augusta National Golf Club gets its natural beauty honestly, as the venerable facility was built on the grounds of the former Fruitland Nurseries and each of the 18 holes is adorned with the trees and shrubs for which the holes are named. The course was created by club founder Bobby Jones and course architect Alister Mackenzie in 1933, and is best known for "Amen Corner" -- the 11th, 12th and 13th holes that often spell the difference between success and failure. Augusta National has been controversially lengthened in recent years, but remains a course where a delicate putting touch is mandatory.

Weather for the day of the masters

Average April temperatures range from highs of 80 degrees to lows of 50 degrees. Hats, cool clothing, and sunscreen should be worn on bright, sunny days.

Please observe all scoreboards/message boards for the WEATHER WARNING sign shown to the right. This sign will appear in advance of inclement weather moving into the area if the Augusta National becomes aware of such weather. When the sign appears, you are advised to take precautions even before play is suspended.
