Bet on the best golfers in the world as they go head-to-head in single-elimination match play competition for a top prize of $1 million and the coveted Walter Hagen Cup, named after one of the game’s greatest match-play players.
The WGC Accenture Match Play Championship is part of the World Golf Championships series of tournaments and the title sponsor of the series’ season-opening event, the Accenture Match Play Championship. This event is played at match play, rather than stroke play, and begins with a field of 64 golfers. The golfers face off in single-elimination, 18-hole, match-play matches, until two remain for the 36-hole championship match.
Unlike stroke play, which tallies the number of strokes from all 18 holes to determine the winner, match play is a hole-by-hole format from the very first hole, providing a player with the ultimate test of his game.
The player winning the most holes wins the match.
Dove Mountain Golf Club: Tortolita Mountains just north of Tucson, the Ritz Carlton Dove Mountain Golf Club became the host to the Match Play Tournament as of 2009. Designed by Jack Nicklaus, The Ritz Carlton Dove Mountain features 27 holes of golf and a 50,000 square foot clubhouse.
Past winners of the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship include Jeff Maggert, Darren Clarke, Steve Stricker, Kevin Sutherland, David Toms, Geoff Ogilvy and Tiger Woods.
The 2009 tournament was dramatic, a battle between golfers Paul Casey and Geoff Ogilvy. The close match ended with Australian Geoff Ogilvy winning the 2009 championship.
The World Golf Championships, or WGC, is a series of high-profile tournaments with international fields, considered the most important tournaments outside of the four majors and the Players Championship.
