This is the 14th consecutive season that the Kapalua Resort’s Plantation course on the island of Maui plays host to the Hyundai Tournament of Champions. Formerly the SBS Championship and the Mercedes-Benz Championship, the tournament has been held at Kapalua Resort since 1999.

Hyundai Motor America and Seoul Broadcasting System International (SBS) announced Thursday that Hyundai has become the title sponsor of the PGA TOUR’s season-opening tournament at The Plantation Course in Kapalua, Hawaii, for the next three years.

The previous longest hosting was when the tournament and former Tournament of Champions was annually played at the La Costa Resort in Carlsbad California.

About the Kapalua Resort

The Kapalua Resort is a 22,000-acre master-planned community on Maui’s northwest coast. The resort is renowned for its championship golf courses; a full-service tennis complex managed by Peter Burwash International; ten residential communities; premier hotel; condominium vacation rentals; three white sand beaches; and a myriad of restaurants and shops. Kapalua Resort is located 32 miles from the Kahului International Airport and 10 miles north of historic Lahaina.
It’s the first PGA tournament of the new year, previously the Mercedes Championship and now the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, and the win goes to Jonathon Bryd. The same Byrd who won in Las Vegas last year with a hole in one walk-off shot in a sudden death playoff.
Well, it was more of the same this year as Jonathon Byrd and Robert Garrigus would take the match into sudden death playoff. However, it wasn’t Byrd who needed to pull out the miracle, instead, he just had to wait for Garrigus to fall short.

Jonathan Byrd -24
Robert Garrigus -24
Graeme McDowell -23
Carl Pettersson -20
Steve Stricker -20
Ian Poulter -18
Matt Kuchar -18

2010 Geoff Ogilvy winner

Geoff Ogilvy successfully defended his title at Kapalua as he won the season-opening SBS Championship by a stroke in Hawaii. The Australian shot a final-round 67 at the par-73 Kapalua Resort Plantation Course to win by a shot at 22 under par from South Africa’s Rory Sabbatini and land the tournament of the previous year’s PGA Tour event winners for a second year in a row.
