The Shell Open is currently played at Redstone Golf Club, but in the past has been played at many of the Houston areas best courses. In the early years it was played at Memorial Golf Course, which is a fantastic public course located in the center of the city. It was also played at Champions Golf Club, which is widely regarded as one of the better golf courses in Texas. And it was also played at a couple of courses just outside the Houston city limits, Quail Valley and TPC at The Woodlands. But now the Shell Open has been hosted at Redstone Golf Club since 2003.
The format of the Houston Open tournament is the standard four day, 72 hole tourney. The current course at Redstone is approximately 7500 yards long, and is a Par 72 course. The Shell Houston Open tournament was also known as the Houston Open, the Houston Classic, the Houston Classic International, the Michelob-Houston Open, the Houston Coca-Cola Open, the Big “I” Houston Open, and the Independent Insurance Agent Open. Nowadays the Shell Houston Open takes place in Humble, Texas, and is hosted by Redstone Golf Club.

Over the years the Shell Houston Open has had many great winners. Just to name some of these great golf players in the list of winners are golfers like: Byron Nelson, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Curtis Strange, Fred Couples and Vijay Singh. In fact, Palmer won the Shell Open twice and both Singh and Strange have won it three times each. The Shell is truly one of the really good PGA tournaments being played today.
2011 Shell HoustonOpen Winner
Phil Mickelson tuned up for next week’s 2011 Masters Tournament by becoming the Shell Houston Open winner, in his first victory since last year’s Masters. The win moved Mickelson’s world ranking to No. 3, while Tiger Woods dropped to No. 7.
